Summary: Ever wondered what ever goes on in the mind of a serial killer? Well, this film...tries to answer that daring question. Apparently, it's an unbridled fever dream of masochistic and incomprehensible imagery that no sane man would venture into.
History: Carl Stargher had a ridiculously awful childhood, with a father that liked nothing more than to torture him and destroy all he enjoyed. Obviously, this broke Carl, and turned him into the emotionless killer we know now. His main method is to kidnap primarily blonde women, and stick them in tanks to slowly drown as he jacks off while being suspended by chains. Okay...anyway, Carl's been put into a coma recently, and the authorities are testing out a brand-new VR system to get into his mind to find the whereabouts of his lair. Honestly, the cops could have figured that out if they just did some extra detective work, but there'd be no movie if that happened. A young cop is about to get trapped in a nightmare world that may or may not have a whole lot of correlation with Carl's issues.
Notable Kills: We just described his main killing method, folks.
Final Fate: The cop eventually confronts both Carl's scared, innocent child self and his tyrannical and insane "king" self. After stabbing the vile demon with a sword, she realizes too late that she killed the good Carl as well. But he welcomes this, and as his actual self's plans are foiled and he dies, little Carl is lowered into a pool to be symbolically drowned and baptized. Believe us when we say that it's one of the more sensible usages of symbolism.
Powers/Abilities: None.
Weakness: Anything conventional.
Scariness Factor: 4-Vincent D'Onofrio's cold, unfeeling presence is plenty unnerving, but it's nothing compared to the nonsensical horror show that is his mind. Even if it doesn't quite make any sense no matter how you slice it, it's nonetheless not a place you want to be for long.
Trivia: -For what it's worth, director Tarsem Singh got his start doing music videos, and it kind of shows in this film. His film also seems to take inspiration from surreal artwork, such as that of the legendary H.R. Giger.
-Unfortunately for Vincent, this film played havoc on his relationship with his wife. It's said that she would not sleep in the same bed with him for weeks after seeing this film.
